| The sequence for the Drosophila heterochromatin is comprised of 2605 individual scaffolds ranging from 1 to 784 kb in size. These scaffolds were generated from Celera's third version of the whole-genome-shotgun assembly (WGS3). Many of these scaffolds have been annotated and cytologically mapped to the heterochromatic regions of chromosomes. Other scaffolds have been annotated but remain unmapped to a chromosome. As the heterochromatin sequence is finished to high quality we will offer improved assemblies of the heterochromatic scaffolds and their localizations in the genome using a variety of techniques.
Users with maps of heterochromatic regions are encouraged to contribute their data so it can be integrated into our knowledge of the heterochromatin landscape and recorded in the database for FlyBase.
